Albufeira is perhaps the best known of all the resorts in Portugal’s Algarve. It covers a surprisingly sprawling area, where amenities and tourist attractions of all kinds are within easy reach.
Albufeira primarily splits into two zones: “the strip” (Montechoro) and the Old Town. The former is undoubtedly a party zone, much loved by youngsters and groups. The Old Town, whilst still busy in summer, retains some authentic Portuguese charm. One of the best things about Albufeira is that these contrasting regions can offer a different vibe for all ages, making it a great choice for large family groups.
Life in Albufeira’s old town centers on several picturesque squares and the Praia dos Pescadores (fishermen’s beach). The beach is backed by a series of cafes and restaurants, and it’s possible to walk for miles to other beaches and resorts, all of which boast the beautiful orange cliffs typical of this region.
One particularly rewarding beach is in the neighbouring resort of Galé, just five kilometers west. The beach boasts an array of coves and rock pools, and a host of watersports concessions in the summer months. Best of all, it faces West, making a sunset dinner in one of the beach restaurants a stunning and memorable night out.
Finally, it’s handy to know that Albufeira has a permanent population running into the tens of thousands. As such, it never feels “closed” off-season, making it a great choice for a winter break in mild, sunny weather.
