Just west of the large town of Lagos, Praia da Luz is a well-known resort that’s popular with families and retirees alike. The town’s main draw is its stunning beach, which is backed by a series of restaurants. Going back from the beach, you find attractive townhouses, complete with trademark Algarve orange trees thriving on the terraces.
There are also plenty of shops hidden away in the backstreets, including a very high-end supermarket and deli that’s sure to appeal to those who are self-catering.
Praia da Luz is also a great choice for walkers. It’s possible to enjoy a sensational cliff top walk all the way to Lagos. The initial scramble uphill to the town’s obelisk is rather grueling, but the route is mostly flat after this initial exertion! In the other direction, the small, unspoiled resorts of Burgau and Salema are within equally easy reach.
Praia da Luz is perhaps not the most authentically Portuguese resort in the Algarve, but is the perfect choice for a quiet and self-contained holiday. It’s hard to do anything here but relax.
